Commit to Lifespaces

Ar. Alpana Kirloskar, a member of the 130-year-old successful business families of India, has, over the years, carved a distinct identity for herself, as an architect and an interior designer. Born and brought up in Delhi, Alpana who acquired a degree in B. Arch (Bachelors in Architecture) from School Of Planning And Architecture, Delhi, is today one of the few women who started her own  Real Estate company ‘Kiara Lifespaces’.

The Alpana Kirloskar Design Studio is admired in the field of architecture and interior designs. Within a short span of me, it has carved a niche for its own. When we ask her for advice towards upcoming talent, she thinks thoughtfully and answers, “Form follows function. So always design keeping in mind the needs, sensibilities, and comfort of the client. Achieve balance, rhythm, harmony, unity, proportion, and scale, by using the basic elements of design: form, line, colour, and texture.”For Alpana, learning is a continuous process. She likes to keep herself updated and believes that is something very important in this field. She has remarkable creativity and would like to take it to the next level. “Pune has a lot of demand for lifestyle furniture, but unfortunately, we do not have good options yet. One has to go to Mumbai, Delhi and abroad to buy furniture. This needs a lot of running around. I would like to open a lifestyle store in Pune. Something like ‘Good Earth’,” she beams.

Her knowledge and experiences are clearly reflected when she talks about her work. She knows her jobs well and overcomes the troubles efficiently. “The challenge in designing a private residence lies in identifying and analyzing the sensibilities of the client, understanding their needs, personality and lifestyle and bringing their dream to fruition. This sometimes clashes with my own design ethos. Thus, the strategy is to find a balance. The challenge in model apartments is quite different. Although I can commit to my own design, the constraint of space and budget is always challenging. The home should have a universal appeal to all walk-in customers as this showcases the builder’s project.

Efficient layouts with optimum usage of space, use of mirrors to give an illusion of infinity, sofa-cum-beds, and collapsible bar units, adding colour in wallpapers, textures and so furnishings help in  overcoming these challenges.” She received Architects, Engineers, and Surveyors Association (AESA) Awards 2007 For Best Interior design residential Project, Fashion Art Design Awards (FAD International) for excellence in the field of interior and Architecture, Times Power Women Award, 2017- Interior Design and Entrepreneurship.
